Effect of reading culture on students performance

It is in light of this that the researcher decided to weigh and find out the impact one of the most important organization in the educational system has on the achievement of his aim ‘the library' in doing this the researcher used a student-librarian perception questionnaire to gather information. The sample consisted of 10 students who were seated in the library at the time the questionnaire was distributed and 10 librarians of Abs fauna library of Diadems College of Education. A percentages as well as T-test analysis of mean scores gotten from analysis of respondents' were computed and analyzed in tables.Findings show that there is no significant difference between students and librarians responses to the impact of reading culture on students' performance. (TCL=3. 3, t-critic=l . 73, at pScholars have proposed different definitions of reading. Item (2008) said that reading is the corner stone of learning; it is the ability to glean meaning from printed symbols. Scabbards (200 7) quoting Galilee describes reading as reasoning involving the meaningful interpretation of words, phrases and sentences requiring all types of thinking such as critical, analytical, creative, imaginative, evaluative, judgmental, and problem solving. Similarly, Babushka (1984) explained that through reading an individual over a period of suitable exposure can acquire efficiency, skill and a set of behavior sin both linguistics and psycholinguistics.Reading therefore consists of complex psycholinguistic processes of identifications, mental integration research and application of written language symbols. It serves as a link between printed symbols and meaning attached to these symbols. Thus achieving interaction between the author and the reader. Despite these assertions and government efforts in developing libraries, reading culture is still at its lowest level among Nigerian students. Poor development of libraries and paucity of reading materials and lack of adequate reading envir onments in Nigerian school system stifles the growth of reading culture. To worsen the situation, all the colleges of education in Nigeria no longer run programmer n library science (JAMB, 2007). Thus the colleges that would be a fertile ground for the training of teacher librarian no longer offer such courses. A pertinent question to this research is what is reading culture? How does the library help to develop reading culture among students especially in the higher institutions of learning, and what factors affect the library effectiveness on this pursing this course. Reading culture is the use of reading as a regular activity. It is the cultivation of an attitude and possession Of skills that make reading a pleasurable, regular and constant activity. Reading ultra is identified as the single most important determination of a student's success in education in our modern education, incomes, skills development and fulfilled employment. The importance and benefits of reading culture ca nnot be over-emphasized. It provides individual's welfare, greater academic performance of students since a student who learns to read, reads to learn, It also provides skills knowledge and right attitude that frees one from boredom or idleness. It as well widens students' general knowledge. It is therefore one of the tools for achieving qualitative education. Finally, poor eating culture among our students has brought our education to the background just as we relegated the relevance of library Purpose of Study The main purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of of libraries on the development of reading culture among students in tertiary institutions. Specifically, the study will examine the following I. How reading culture affects the academic performance of students II. Whether and how the library creates an enabling ground for the development of reading culture.Significance of the Study This study aims at finding out the impact of libraries on the development of eatin g culture among students in tertiary' institutions. Its findings therefore are to be of value to government agencies and policy makers who aims to tackle the problems of reading culture and poor academic performance among tertiary students. It will also be relevant to students who wish to develop their reading habits as well as librarians to know measures that can encourage real patronage and use of the library materials for self- development. Finally this research will improve reading culture among Nigerian students in general and in Diadems College of Education since some f the required enabling environment is already in place. Statement of hypothesis The following hypotheses were formulated to guide the study; 1 . Reading culture improves the academic performance of students 2. The library creates an enabling ground for the development of reading culture. Conceptual approach to reading culture Horny (2002), sees reading culture as reading behavior which is mainly done often becaus e it has been established.According to Nines (2002), reading culture means learning tendencies that enable student work privately. Aweigh (1 998), describe reading culture as the way and manner a student Lana his or her private reading outside teaching hours in order to master a particular subject or topic. Scabbards(2007) defined reading culture as when an individual habitually and regularly read books. According to Van (2001) reading culture is seen as an â€Å"active intervention to open up reading choices, increase readers' enjoyment and offer opportunities for people to share their experiences†.Inside (2008), described reading culture as the process of building up positive attitude among students and children over a period Of time. He added that reading culture is the kind of culture that imbibes eating and studying as the basis of growth and development. Though it is better to inculcate reading culture right from a tender age, so that it can be imbibed as growth takes p lace, it is important to emphasis that is better late than never. It is in light of this that reading culture is being taught, promoted and advocated right from a tender age of a child in every serious and more developed nation of the world.Importance of reading culture According to Knick and hussy's (2006) through reading, children knowledge base is enhanced, intellect sharpen and misconception eroded. Good authenticating helps the student in critical reflection in skills outcomes, such as selecting, analyzing critiquing and synthesizing. Fielded (2004) observed that children can get information through reading which is an essential tool is indispensable in the decision making process Of individuals and organizations van (2000). According to Gadded (2003) reading is a means of proficiency and excellence in all human endeavourers. It is through reading that mind is enriched and knowledge is acquired, Undue (1997) observed that extensive reading is the most obvious way for children to enrich their vocabulary. On the same view, Horton (1983) added that the more a student reads, the more background knowledge he acquires of other peoples way of behavior and thought. Reading is clearly essential for the development of human intellectual but also a most controversial of all subjects. It is an essential social skill and must be practiced often in order to acquire and develop good reading culture.Payoffs (1995) in her study extensively discussed pursuit and submitted that it promotes a deep awareness and build the child up emotionally and intellectually. Similarly, crasher (1993), brilliantly illustrates owe reading culture benefits students achievement. He remarked that, â€Å"children or young adults read more when they see other people reading the longer free reading is practiced, the more consistent and positive the results and that people who read more write better†. He then, submitted that reading as a leisure activity is best predicted of comprehension, v ocabulary and reading speed of students.According to Sati (2002), reading culture influences in the promotion Of ons personal development in particular and social progress in general. He added that, â€Å"Regular and systematic reading harpers the intellect, refines the emotions, alleviates taste and provides perspectives for ones living; and thereby prepares a person for an effective participation in the social, religious, culture and political life, reading fires the imagination of the person, it adds new sight to eyes and new wisdom to mind. Skunked (2007), points out that an individual who reads widely is empowered because knowledge is one of the best tools an individual can get. According to Hussy (2007), reading is the foundation upon which other academic skills are built because through reading, information can be acquired which bridges the gap between knowledge and ignorance. Tell and sneaked (2007) assert that ability to read is at the heart of self education, lifelong lea rning and that is an arty capable of transforming life and society. An individual who reads well has a means of widening mental horizons and for multiplying opportunities of success. Reading is a vital factor affecting intellectual and emotional growth. Sir Richard Steele has logically quoted, â€Å"reading is to the mind what exercise is to body'. Reading for a student is very important for the development of language skills. It also indispensable tool or achieving emotional stability, enjoying leisure hours, sharing experiences which are encountered in books, and for keeping abstract of what is happening inside the world at large. It is for this reason that students, librarians teachers, parents and all concerned with the emotional, educational and cultural development of children must help them to cultivate a healthy reading culture. Role of Libraries in Development of Reading Culture. Libraries play vital role in the worlds system of education and information storage and retrieva l. The library makes available through books, journal, alms, recordings and other media knowledge that has been accumulated for ages.

That Newfangled Technology

Set Phasers on Stun Case Case 14: That Newfangled Technology Summary: On the morning of September 8, 1923, Lieutenant Commander Donald T. Hunter was assigned to responsible for leading fourteen destroyers of Destroyer Squadron 11 to depart from San Francisco to San Diego. They were returning home after an escorting Battle Division 4 from Puget Sound to San Francisco. At that time, the Destroyer Squadron comprised with leading flagship that commanded by Captain Hunter, USS Delphy (DD-261) and followed by; the four ships of Destroyer Division 33, USS S. P.Lee (DD-310), USS Young (DD-312), USS Woodbury (DD-309), and USS Nicholas (DD-311); the five ships from Destroyer Division 31, USS Farragut (DD-300), USS Fuller (DD-297), USS Percival (DD-298), USS Somers (DD-301), and USS Chauncey (DD-296); and four ships from Destroyer Division 32, USS Kennedy (DD-306), USS Paul Hamilton (DD-307), USS Stoddert (DD-302), and USS Thomson (DD-305). The warships conducted tactical gears and weaponry exe rcises en route, including a competitive speed run of 20 knots. Later in the day, as weather worsened, the ships formed up a column on the squadron leader â€Å"Delphy†. That evening, around 2000 hours (8:00 p. . ), the leading flagship broadcast an erroneous report, based on an improperly interpreted radio compass bearing, showing the squadrons position about nine miles off Point Arguello. About an hour later, the destroyers turned east to enter what was thought to be the Santa Barbara Channel, though it could not be seen owing to the thick fog. Unfortunately, due to a combination of abnormally strong currents and navigational complacency, it led the squadron onto the rocks offshore point and rugged area of San Miguel Island, near Honda Point. Just after turning, Delphy struck the rocks at 2105 (9:05 p. m. ), plowing ashore at 20 knots.More than worse, Delphy was followed by S. P. Lee, which hit and swung broadside against the bluffs. Young piled up adjacent to Delphy and ca psized, trapping many of her fire and engine room crew below. While Woodbury, Nicholas, and Fuller struck reefs and ran aground offshore, Chauncey ran in close aboard Young. However, the alarm sirens slowed Somers and Farragut enough, so they just touched ground before backing off to deeper water while the five other destroyers steered completely clear. Although heavy pounding surf broke over the seven stranded destroyers, eventually breaking the Delphy into two parts.Hundreds of thousands gallons of fuel oil from seven ships spilled into the crashing waves, carbide bombs were exploded when they came in contact with the water, and numerous fires began on the ships and on the surface of the sea. Finally, 23 men died in the ensuring attempts to abandon the ships and make it to shore in the darkness and heavy surf. About 450 survivors from the seven warships made their way slowly to the narrow and rocky beach below the cliff during the hour that followed. S. P. Lee S. P. Lee Fuller Ful ler Woodbury Woodbury Chauncey Chauncey Delphy Delphy Young Young Nicholas Nicholas What Went Wrong:It later turned out to the light that the Squadron was actually several miles north and further east, but Captain Hunter had disbelieved the accuracy of a Point Arguello radio signal. Following the turn, Point Arguello was dead ahead, and distant only about two nautical miles. The Point Arguello light may have been hidden by the fog. However, did Captain Hunter issue an order to change-of course of 95 ° left turn, or did he order his ships to turn to a bearing of 95 ° magnetic? Additional Factors: Communication between Captain Hunter and Radioman Falls: The communication between Captain Hunter and the radioman was misunderstood. The radioman would report the wrong bearings, when the reciprocal bearing should have been reported instead. Had the correct bearings been reported from the beginning, the ship wouldn’t have crashed. â€Å"Newfangled Technology† Feedback: The mistaken â€Å"error† proved that Captain Hunter cannot always rely on his strong self-reliance and that even a skilled mathematician makes mistakes; and that it’s acceptable to rely on technology. There was no feedback given back to Captain Hunter to state its’ reasoning behind the bearing that was being reported to him. Also, there was no feedback given to challenge Captain Hunter’s navigations. If more feedback was given, it could have been sensed that navigation was off route. Continued use of â€Å"That Newfangled Technology†: After the incident of being reported the wrong bearings, Captain Hunter still continued to use the navigation by radio bearing. It was assumed as an honest mistake. It wasn’t until after the crash that Captain Hunter realized that the radioman was giving him the correct bearings from the beginning. This could have been prevented if the system would have been checked after the first wrong bearing, to see what the re asoning behind such an error was; instead of continuing on the journey.More Information: According to an article by Noah Andre Trudeau, â€Å"California Naval History – Point Honda: A Naval Tragedy’s Chain of Errors†, a lean budget and distrust of new technology contributed to a naval tragedy at Honda Point, California (Trudeau, 2012). Speed was the essential creed of the early to mid-20th century destroyer driver. Determination and self-confidence was a style of command in which those qualities could achieve the impossible while in peacetime the same attributes contributed to one of the U. S. Navy’s most significant disasters (Trudeau, 2012).The 18 ships were meant to travel along the California coast to San Diego, with their two high powered and low powered turbines, four tall thin funnels and a book speed topped at 32 knots. Due to the postwar budget cutbacks, they were operating at 20-30% below full complement. Although a lot of live were lost during this tragedy, all the blame wasn’t on Captain Hunter. Everyone played a part, from, Watson’s fixation on making a record 20-knot passage along with his failure to supervise the navigation, Blodgett’s inability to express his concerns, and the silence of the other squadron officers.Uncertainties surround the new technology, unusual weather conditions and minor equipment problems also played a part (Trudeau, 2012). Lesson Learned: This case illustrated the importance of human error and testing all new technology before use. Although all faults in the technology may not be quickly discovered testing all aspects is critical. It is learned that although you may be proficient in a skill and have applicable experience, mistakes still happen. The people with great skill and power, like Lieutenant Commander Donald T.Hunter, are still fallible as human beings. Despite having a fully functioning technology system to navigate, it shouldn’t completely be dependent on. Instead, the two should assist each other, human intelligence and newfound technology. Analysis of Kentucky Fried Chicken-Free-Samples for Students

KFC founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, is an American fast food chain popular for their fried chicken items. They have their headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the world’s second largest chain of restaurant after McDonalds with its presence in almost 20,000 locations globally in 123 countries (Alviola IV et al.,2014). KFC was one of the foremost American restaurants to expand internationally in Canada, Mexico and United Kingdom in the mid 1960s. The KFC chain is a subsidiary of the Yum brands, a brand that also owns pizza hut and taco bell chains (Kelly & Swinburn, 2015).   KFC’s original product was the fried chicken piece that was seasoned by Sander’s secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices. However, since the 1990s they expanded their menu to include chicken fillet burgers, wraps, salads, side dishes like French fries and soft drinks. A PESTEL analysis is a method used to analyze and monitor the external marketing environment that has its impact on an organization, which is used to identify threats and weaknesses of the firm. PESTEL stands for political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal. Political factors study how and to what extent the government intervenes into the functioning of the economy. This includes the policies of the government, the political stability or instability in the market, tax policy, foreign trade policy, environmental law, legal law and trade restrictions. India has a steady government. The labor force is expensive and the companies have to pay high taxes, which reduces the profit rate in the country. The government has given freedom to the companies to do their business there way (Samnani, 2014). KFC designs the pricing structure keeping in mind the income of the people that way KFC can cater to all the classes. The political climate of India is friendly towards international businesses, which is an advantage for KFC. The operation of KFC is affected by the government rules and policies regarding the fast food industry. Currently government is controlling the fast food restaurants because of the various health issues and obesity related proble ms attached to it. KFC maintains a good relation with the government by paying taxes properly and increasing employment opportunities for the masses and follows the legal rules and restriction. Economic factors have important impact on how an organization work and how profitable they are. Economic factors include the rate of economic growth, interest rates, inflation, income of the consumers, exchange rates and so on. KFC is struggling in many economies like china where their sales are declining due to its health factors (Schrà ¶der & McEachern, 2005). With the growing health consciousness among the people, the sale of KFC is declining in many economies. Every outlet of KFC gives employment to around 10-15 people in a way it curbs unemployment ("Home | KFC", 2018). India’s economic condition is extremely good and per capita is high. Population being low resources is abundant. Though earlier the target of KFC was the upper classes, later on they changed their target market to include the middle-income group. The economic condition of India is an advantage for the company as this increases its sales. This area involves the social and cultural beliefs of the consumers. This includes population growth, age distribution, career attitudes and so on. These factors are extremely important because this directly affects how marketers understand their consumers. In the social issues KFC luring of children to their unhealthy food, unethical treatment of animals and low wages to employees are widely criticized (Shoyemi, 2014). It is rumored that the chicken used by KFC are genetically modified to store more fat, which makes the chicken incapable to carry its own body weight. Many animal welfare organizations like PETA condemn KFC for such heinous issues. The social system in India is beneficial for the further growth of the company. The banking system is also strong and literacy rates are high. India being a capitalistic economy the income of the people are high, and the busy schedule of the people makes them resort to these fast food restaurants. KFC very tactfully adapts to the culture of the country they operate in. the busy lifestyle of the masses makes them resort to these unhealthy fast foods. The growing awareness about the harmful effects of fast food is proving to be a threat for KFC. The technological progression of the country affects the organization’s marketing and daily operations India has a very high per capita income and literacy rate. There technological development is also very advanced (Kelsey, 2015). Thus internet usages and exposure to advanced technology is high. KFC uses strategy to introduce new technology when they feel it is needed.   In the technological era KFC has started mobile apps with the help of which ordering and payment online is made possible. In a developing country like India this acts as an opportunity because this increases its sales and growth. With the growing concern on environment, this factor has come to the forefront in the recent years. It has become extremely important due to the scarcity of raw materials. KFC buys their packaging materials from companies that contribute to deforestation (Tiwari, 2017) This particular company also uses underage children to work for them in order to pay fewer wages to them. KFC’s treatment of the chickens used for the meal is said to be injected to make them obese. This harms the chicken and makes them extremely toxic for human consumption. This also poses several difficulties for the chickens that sometimes die because of the injections. The educated people condemn these various factors since they pose as a threat for the KFC chain. This includes the health and safety factors, advertising standards, equal opportunities, consumer laws and rights, product safety and product labeling. Every company need to know what is legal and what is not in the economy they are operating. For organizations that are global this is a difficult area to act because every country has different rules and laws (Smith et al.,2014). The government in India changes after every five years, corruption level is low. International companies are invited to start their business but their profit is low because of the high taxes. The government gives enough freedom to the firms to conduct their business and does not intervene unnecessary in the daily workings. KFC has to abide by the legal rules and regulations laid down by the government of India for the smooth operations. The above analysis clearly provides an overview of the external environmental conditions faced by the company KFC. The external environmental conditions form an important part of the company and often it is seen that they are beyond the control of the company. The company however, can utilize the external environmental conditions by turning the risks or threats faced by it into future opportunities. Global diversity can be defined as the process by means of which one company can distinguish itself from another not only on the basis of the services provided by them but also on the basis of the strategies as well as the global plan followed by them. This is an important process by means of which the various companies can adapt themselves to the global market and it also allows them to work as per the needs and the requirements of the customers. The company Kentucky Fried Chicken uses the various aspects of global diversity to market its products in more than 198 different countries of the world ("Home | KFC", 2018). The company KFC, in India itself has more than 350 outlets, thereby making India as one the largest center of its business ("Home | KFC", 2018). America is another country where the products of the company KFC are in much demand ("Home | KFC", 2018). The company KFC, as a matter of fact has its headquarters in Kentucky, United States of America ("Home | KFC", 2018). The cultural characteristics of the country India on the basis of the Hofstede’s cultural model would reveal the following facts- Figure 1: Hofstede’s Cultural Insights for India Source: ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018) The above figure clearly indicates that the Indian people score low on the individualism quotient, which means the people like to work in groups and group culture is prevalent there ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). The people of India score very high on the power distance score which means that the people appreciate the hierarchy system prevalent at their work place and they are very dependent on their bosses or the higher authorities for the performance of their job roles ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). The score of India on the Hofstede’s culture for the aspect of masculinity indicates that the Indian society is driven by competition, success and achievement ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). The low score of the nation for the aspect of uncertainty avoidance indicates that the people have low preference for avoiding uncertainty ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). The cultural characteristics of the country United States of America on the basis of Hofstede’s cultural model would reveal the following facts- Figure 2: Hofstede’s cultural insights for United States of America Source: ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018) The above figure clearly indicates that the people of the United States of America are very individualistic and like to work in an individualistic manner (Taras, Steel, & Kirkman, 2012). The low score on the power distance aspect indicates that the people of the United States of America do not endorse the inequality of the division of power in the society ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). The high score on the aspect of masculinity indicates that the people of the United States of America are driven by factors like success, competition and achievement ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). The low score on the uncertainty avoidance indicates that the people of America are fairly tolerant towards the changes in technology, innovations and the desire to try out new things ("Country Comparison - Hofstede Insights", 2018). Therefore, from the above discussion it becomes clear that if the American company, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is to expand its business in India then it will have to take into consideration the various aspects of the culture of the Indian nation. The company will especially have to make adjustments in the aspects of power distance, individualism, uncertainty avoidance as well as masculinity. KFC opened its first outlet in India at Bangalore in the year 1995 ("Home | KFC", 2018). The company currently owns more than 350 outlets in the nation ("Home | KFC", 2018). This is a reflection of the successful collaboration of the company KFC with the franchise Yum ("Yum! Brands – A World with More Yum!", 2018). It is to be noted that the company has transformed some of the traditional products offered by it in order to suit the taste as well as the needs of the Indian customers (Sania, Kalpina, & Javed, 2015). It is to be noted that in the initial phase the company had to face some protest as the regards the type of raw materials used by it for the preparation of its products. Then there were others who protested to the non-vegetarian products sold by the outlets ("Home | KFC", 2018). The company KFC, therefore in order to capture the needs as well as the requirements of the customers started its new brand of products and food items with the slogan â€Å"So Veg, So Goodâ € ("Home | KFC", 2018). This plan was introduced as part of its Indian-specific promotional strategy, which was much appreciated by the Indian customers. The second important strategy adopted by the company in a bid to capture the Indian market was the introduction of the 5-in-1 meal boxes and the use of the local dabbawalas for the purposes of the delivery of the products to the office goers (Shoyemi, 2014). It is to be noted that the Indian dabbawalas are known for their efficiency as well as timely delivery services (Shoyemi, 2014). Therefore, this strategy proved to a vital one for the company as it not only enabled them to procure a reliable delivery system but also enabled them to capture the office goers customers of the nation. Another, important strategy utilized by the company is the introduction of the new system of Watt a Box, which is similar in many respects to the traditional 5-in-1 meal boxes of the company with the only difference being that in this particular r espect the customers can order their meals over the phone (Hussain, 2014). The company even follows effective pricing policy as well as provides discount services in a bid to attract more customers to its outlets. These in short are some of the strategies, which the company has utilized over the years to capture the market of the Indian nation. The company offers a wide range of products to its Indian customers like Hot & Crispy Chicken, Chicken Zinger Burger, Fiery Grilled bucket chickens, Rice Bowlz and various others ("Home | KFC", 2018). The company also provides a wide range of vegetarian products to the Indian customers. This is something which is not seen among the range of products offered by the company in its American outlets. The pricing strategy followed by the company in its Indian outlets is different from the ones which it follows in its American market. The company follows a pricing strategy in its Indian market as per the needs and the requirements of the customers and the market conditions. The company uses the social media and newspapers for the purposes of promotion of its products. The company in order to attract more customers had tie up with various other companies like Yum brands and Pepsi Co ("Home | KFC", 2018). They even offer attractive offers like combo meals and others to attract the customers. The primary supplier of raw materials for the company is Venky’s, which is the largest supplier of raw chickens in India ("Home | KFC", 2018). The operational strategy followed by the company in India are listed below- It is to be noted that the business of the company grew by 8% in the country of India in the year 2017 ("Home | KFC", 2018). The company owns more than 350 outlets in the country ("Home | KFC", 2018). The supplier system of the company in the country India is shown by the following figure- The primary competitors of the company KFC in India are McDonalds, Subway, Domino’s and various others ("Home | KFC", 2018). Initially, the target customer base of the company was just the office going population and to capture that customer the company effectively utilized the services of the dabbawalas. However, over the years, the focus of the company has changed significantly and to grab the attention of the other part of the population of the nation, the company started to focus on its vegetarian menu. The company, presently, is trying to grab the attention of the younger generation of the Indian population in the age range of 18-40 ("Home | KFC", 2018). It is commonly seen that the people in this particular age range are the ones who live a fast life and are more open to the kind of products offered by the company KFC. Risk can be defined as the potential situation in which a person or an organization stands to lose or gain something of considerable value (McNeil, Frey, & Embrechts, 2015). It is to be noted that risk forms an important aspect in the process of business management (Schermerhorn et al., 2014). It is often that the companies which are willing to come out of their comfort zone and take considerable amount of risks are the ones which succeed in the longer run (McNeil, Frey, & Embrechts, 2015). The company, KFC is an example of this particular doctrine. The company KFC is one of the largest and most loved brands of the United States of America. The company could have stayed content with its monopoly of the business world. However, the company undertook a considerable amount of risk when it decided to venture into the market of India. It is to be noted that the culture as well as the eating habits of India is completely different from the country of the United Nations of America. There wa s a considerable element of risk involved in the process. However, the company decided to take the risk and judging by the performance of the company in the recent few years in the Indian nation it would be fair to say that the risk taken by the company KFC paid off. The company in the recent times has enjoyed considerable success in the Indian nation. However, there are some risks as well which the company faces in the country of India- The company KFC can manage the above listed risks by various effective strategies like the ones mentioned bellow- Therefore, from the above discussion it becomes clear that the companies need to take various factors into consideration for the purpose of doing business in other countries of the world. It is normally seen that various companies embark on the path of globalization without taking into consideration the cultural, political, environmental, legislative and other aspects of the countries in which they are about to open their business centers. This often instead of expanding the business of the company causes several problems for the parent companies. Therefore, it is advisable for the companies to take into consideration the internal as well as the external environments of the countries into consideration before opening their business centers into those countries. The companies also need to take into consideration the various risks faced by them and develop effective risk management strategies which would mitigate the risks faced by them. It is often seen that an effective management of risks can lead to the overall growth as well as the development of the company concerned. Alviola IV, P. A., Nayga Jr, R. M., Thomsen, M. Political ideologies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1

Political ideologies - Essay Example However, despite having attempted to define the word, it must be noted that there cannot really be any single definition for the term ‘ideology.’ This is because different people look at the word with different meanings; some might imply it to be some sort of an identity thinking, others might look at it as some sort of a necessary illusion. Many people feel that an ideology is something that should be ruled by the dominant thoughts within society. However, this is a wrong notion because in just the same way, a minor section of society might be thinking along different lines, and creating their own set of beliefs which might not be as acceptable, but are something that they live by anyway. Ideologies may also be termed as illusions or mere fragments from within the thought process of a person. Some of the world’s famous ideologies that have been penned down have included the works of Hegel, Marx and even Georg Lukacs. It has been known through studies in history and politics that the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries have had a great impact on how people live today. These eras marked the inception of ideologies laid down by famous thinkers and intellectual powerhouses. Names like Freud, Keynes, Darwin and Smith shaped the way people existed, and gave life new meanings. They spoke about various things ranging from evolution to economics and helped people understand the reason for their existence. Thus, this is how an ideology might create conflict within culture and society, and the people because not everything is compatible with each other. It depends from one person to another. For example, if one actually would like to understand what the term signifies, then they must do it by putting themselves in different people’s shoes and trying to ascertain what they might be going through and how they might perceive a certain

The Bean Trees - Essay Example merican parental rights and issues related to a psychological realm often operated within the context of myriad literary age concerned with the coming of an age is handled uniquely and brilliantly in the novel. Coming of an age which is quite interlinked with the themes of transition, metamorphosis and advancement of growing time or approach of old age is the central theme of many texts. The plot of the â€Å"The Bean Trees† demands a unique representation of the theme. The â€Å"Bildungsroman† or coming of an age is typical of a genre which focuses on the psychological development of the protagonist that comes with the maturity of his or her growing chronological age too. The genre of the novel also speaks about the quest for an answer or experience quite evident through the life of the protagonist of â€Å"The Bean Trees†. The genre also presents a conflict between the sensitive person and the society in which he lives and this conflict gives oxygen to the development of the plot. In â€Å"The Bean Trees†, Taylor with her trajectory in her old bug learns new phase of life with weird experiences of getting a baby child to meeting Mattie, who is an ocean of wisd om in terms of perceiving life. The plot, character portrayal, theme, setting and language of the novel from the outset represents the sound and hue of Kentucky life. The trajectory of Taylor, the protagonist of the novel and her meeting with the baby girl whom she names Turtle builds not only the plot of the novel but at every stage, her encounter with new people and their life style displays a set of colourful characters. The syntax and the language of the novel are quite lucid and full of colloquial terminologies launches the novel almost into a paradigm of folklore. The discovery of motherhood is almost like encountering an accident by carefree, independent, young girl named Taylor and her story of love, friendship, abandonment and sudden revelation of resources that are surprising in an area which

Economics Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Economics - Term Paper Example In their notable works, famous economic thinkers such as Mishan (1967), Scitovsky (1976) and Arrow et al. (1995) have critiqued GDP, arguing that it is a significant mathematical measure, but not a comprehensive measure of the economic activity of a nation (Kitov, n.d.). In the recent past, GDP economic measure has been considered equal to the social welfare of society. It is evident with the recent adoption of the term "standard of living", used synonymously with GDP. However, this relationship is not buoyed by any significant macroeconomic concept, but has become a habit in the recent past. What is conceivably utmost conspicuous is that a huge bulk of reporters and legislators, irrespective of their party-political inclinations, make very credulous declarations about GDP (vintrova, n.d.). It is therefore not astounding then that we see the majority of people in the world prefer economic growth in terms of GDP growth. The same has been supported by an obvious emphasis on GDP growth by global institutions such as the OECD and IMF. Numerous items and events in this life cannot be assessed through GDP, but they are measurable using the cadent of education, health, clean environment, social welfare, freedom and many others. A famous economist started the process of distinguishing the commodities that are comprised in the GDP measure and the capabilities that are omitted from it. His efforts, buoyed by his colleagues efforts led to the notable discoveries of techniques of supplanting GDP. There are various flaws associated with the GDP measure of economic growth. Key among them; it is reported that GDP measures average costs rather than the benefits that emanate from the market operations. It is also said that GDP leaves out many external costs associated with the country’s economic growth. In the years between 1950 and 1965, a negative mean welfare trend was experienced in

Reality Tv Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Reality Tv - Research Paper Example Media plays a great role in keeping the society updated on current issues and entertainment among other benefits to the society, but it can turn to be disastrous when ethical issues are not well considered. Media could promote pornography, propaganda and false/doctored information, which promote culture rot and immorality among other negative societal traits (Kieran, 39). Ethics applies in different areas in the media industry, and each country has established ethical guidelines to guide each media personality depending on the type of interaction he/she have with the audience. Media personalities in their profession must understand the prevailing ethical and legal guidelines in the industry. They act as the eye or mind openers of the society. They are required to inform the society on the current occurrences or happenings in the economical, political, entertainment, religion, Educational, governance and health among other societal issues. The majority of the media personalities are t he role models or mentors to several individuals, more so the teenagers, who are likely to take over media personalities’ dress style, walk style and language among other issues. It would be better if the media personalities consider some ethics in the career to mentor or encourage development of responsible and respective society members. It is worth mentioning that media is among the most complex careers, due to the nature of interaction it has with the public. Everyone is always watching eager to learn the current happenings, any slightest mistake or misconduct may compromise their respect and relationship with the public. News manipulation forms one of the ethical issues in the media industry. It is the omission or alterations of some elements in the news in favors of certain individuals or community. This is common with politics where some political aspirants or leaders may use his/her power or office to influence whatever is being conveyed to the public. Some media comp anies may also manipulate media content on some bribes or tokens by the wealthy and influential political class. Although there is no specific law describing certain consequences to such act, but a company may lose the public trust. Some external stakeholders like advertising companies or agencies may cut their links and deals with such media company. Social researchers more so in developing nations indicate that major civil and international wars have been caused by the manipulation or doctoring of the actual facts. The audience or viewers will have no time to evaluate the news or any other media content but take to the streets and cause havoc. Manipulating the news is more about telling lies to the public and this is demoralizing. Some of the modern media companies do not observe certain international media ethical standards. The advancement of technology implies some life changes like dress code, entertainment as well as relationships among other aspects of human life. Media pers onalities hardly consider their career ethics so long as their audience is entertained or contented. Modern ladies in the media companies wear short and sex appealing uncomfortable dresses to keep the male audience attracted. This may be appealing to the younger generation unlike older adults who appreciate good morals. Media personalit

The Damned Human Race Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Damned Human Race - Essay Example To start with, his gains credibility through his proves that man is crueler as opposed to the other species. This is witnessed when he observed that, men hunted and killed seventy-two buffalo for sport and used only half leaving seventy-one and half buffalos to rot. To show the difference between man and other species he put seven young calves in a cafà ©, a reptile eats only one of them and does not harm the rest, and despite doing the same with other species, the result remained the same. He further shows cruelty of human race as his the only species that tries to eliminate his own kind by slaughtering strangers of his own kind as it was witnessed in the Zulu war by prince Napoleon and in day today in Afghanistan and Iraq a trait that no other species possess. Through this arguments and use of ethos and pathos, it is evident that Man is crueler as opposed to other species, which makes him less as compared to other species (Twain and Nicholls) The trait of greedy is also evident in the human race as opposed to other races. This is observed when he uses an example of gathering habits of man as compared to those of animals. Human race accumulated more millions of money and still have a great desire for more even more that they will never use in their lifetime but is just to appease their desire. Animals have the same chance to accumulate as much food as they can, but they gather only what they need for their survival, this was witnessed in animals like Squirrels, bees, birds and ants. Through his well-argued example, the human race is greedy but other species are not, and this also makes his essay a successful one (Twain and Watson). The human race is also the species that show slavery. Slavery has been witnessed in the scramble for land by use of force and bloodshed. This slavery never ended but is still practiced in one way or other. Man has always been

Milton's Paradise Lost Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Milton's Paradise Lost - Essay Example mon values riches of the world as Milton puts it, â€Å"Mammon, the least erected Spirit that fell From Heaven; for even in Heaven his looks and thoughts Were always downward bent, admiring more The riches of heaven’s pavement, trodden gold, Than aught divine or holy else enjoyed In vision beatific.† (Milton 25). The followers of Mammon also value riches and earthly pleasures and the reason for this is that, they took after their master, Mammon, who fell from Heaven due to his greed. The love of the followers of Mammon for the things of the world affect their relationship with God due to the fact that, Mammon, is more like the opposite of the one and only true God. Thus, while the children of God lay up treasures in heaven, the followers of Mammon lay treasures for themselves on earth. the implication of this is that, the more the followers of Mammon layup treasures for themselves on earth, they keep getting farther away from the truth. Another implication of this is that, the followers of Mammon can never have a cordial relationship with God as one cannot serve God and Mammon. The values of the devil Mammon and the values of the followers of Mammon are similar in the sense that, just like their master, the followers of Mammon also have an irrationally strong desire to acquire and keep money. Thus, the values of the followers of Mammon and their master are similar in their avariciousness. It is significant that Milton chooses to make Sin a woman as it is believed that the devil used woman to bring Sin into the world. It was through the deception of the first woman, Eve by the serpent that Satan succeeded in turning the hearts of men from God. This shows the significance of Milton’s choice to make Sin a woman. Milton used the relationship between Sin, Death, and Chaos to show how sin brought many plagues to mankind. Milton tried to show that it was sin that brought chaos and confusion into the world and the result of which is ultimately death. The Bible even

Discuss how RAID can be implimented Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Discuss how RAID can be implimented - Essay Example back is its high cost due to use of a separate processor and software which gives the RAID system greater strength to handle recovery and disk rebuilding. Another approach to implementing hardware RAID is IOC. The advantage of controller-based RAID is that it is cheaper because it simply uses processors on the disk controllers. However, controller based RAID is restricted by the power of the processor and the memory bandwidth of the controller, which makes it slower than IOP RAID. On the other hand, software RAID can be implemented using a disk controller driver or an operating system. Software RAID is cheaper than hardware RAID but is not as reliable. Software RAID may be useful in small applications where quality performance is not really expected. It is used in the drivers of the hard disk controllers and is independent of the operating system. Operating System based RAID uses a RAID engine in the operating system. Both disk controller driver and operating system driver RAID are dependent on system processor which can be specifically used in low performance and lightly loaded

Plea Bargaining Essay Example for Free

Plea Bargaining Essay Search for justice is a sensitive process. It entails accurateness and reliability. The truth, which is the road to justice, must fully be established without any trace of doubt. The process itself is complicated and time- consuming. Nonetheless, it has to be undergone by every party because of the precious life that is at stake. In criminal prosecution, the defendant has been guaranteed rights and privileges. This is so not because the legal system favors him but to shield himself from any arbitrary manipulation of the court or any legal officer. Constitutionally, the accused is presumed innocent unless proven beyond reasonable doubt (Davis, 2007, p. 44). This is a constitutional grant that cannot be surrendered by the accused. Most importantly, it is to avoid incrimination of innocent people. During the prosecution of the case, it is also very important that the accused undergoes the process of plea bargaining. Generally, plea bargaining is â€Å"the negotiation of an agreement between a prosecutor and a defendant whereby the defendant is permitted to plead guilty to a reduced charge† (Merriam- Webster Online, 2008). Specifically, from the word bargaining, it entails two or more parties, usually the defendant and the prosecutor. On the bargaining, the defendant is given a choice whether to plead guilty and waive his constitutional right or to continue to trial. But before the defendant makes his choice, the prosecutor presents the circumstantial evidences that would lead to the conviction of the defendant. Sometimes, the prosecutor offers dropping some charges against the defendant or the crime will be lowered to a lighter offense in exchange of guilty plea by the defendant. It can be observed here that the prosecution is in control of the plea bargaining (Davis, 2007, p. 43). The plea bargaining process usually evokes negative reactions because of the belief that the defendants right is curtailed (Davis, 2007, p. 43). However, in many instances, it offers several benefits for both the defendant and the prosecutor. It has been said that criminal prosecution consumes time, money, and effort. Plea bargaining offers the shortening of the trial process when the defendant pleaded guilty. On the part of the prosecutor, if the defendant pleaded guilty, he no longer needs to conduct trials in every case that he prosecute (Davis, 2007, p. 43). Notably, the burden of proving guilt beyond reasonable doubt lies on the prosecutor. If the defendant pleaded guilty, he is no longer required to establish every element of the crime being attributed to the defendant. In addition, the prosecutor will be freed from stress of for presenting witnesses, sending subpoenas, preparing statements for every testimonies, and argue on every issue. Thus, the trial is shortened and the prosecutor can have other time for his other duties. However, in order to obtain all these, the prosecutor must offer an encouraging and strong incentive to the defendant. Th defendants rights to trial and innocence unless proven are a very essential privileges that cannot easily be surrendered. However, when the prosecution can easily establish the elements of the crime committed, the burden will certainly be met and the defendant will be put to prison. In addition, if the prosecutions evidences are strong enough, conviction for the defendant will easily be achieved. In these case, it is advantageous for the defendant to plead guilty so as not to expose him to long and tiring trial period. Additionally, it will also shun his family away from stressful trial process. Most importantly, some charges will be dropped in his favor, and he will also be penalized for lesser offense. It also follows that his criminal liability or term of imprisonment will be shortened. Furthermore, plea bargaining do not necessarily sacrifice the rights of the defendant because at the onset of the plea bargaining, he has given the freedom whether to enter a plea or not. The defendant is very aware of the consequences that the trial may bring to his life and his family, and at this particular stage, he is given a choice to obtain a favorable, or mitigating grant for himself. But definitely, if he is strongly aware that he is innocent, then his rights to trial and presumption of innocence shall be granted.

Personality Paper Essay Example for Free

Personality Paper Essay Why are some people shy and others are outgoing? Why are some people kind and gentle, while others are hostile and aggressive? The answer to these questions can be found in three of the theories that describe personality. These theories are; psychoanalytic, humanistic, and social cognitive. Founded by Sigmund Freud, psychoanalysis is a theory that â€Å"stresses the influence of unconscious mental processes, the importance of sexual and aggressive instincts, and the enduring effects of early childhood experience on personality.† (Hockenbury 2014) This theory states that a person’s behavior and attitude are a result of past experiences, unconscious thoughts, buried memories, as well as a desire for pleasure. The second theory, based upon the potential that all humans have, is called the humanistic perspective. Rather than focusing on negative personality aspects, humanists think of all people as good and completely self-aware. An important concept to be aware of within this area of self-awareness is passed on to children from their parents. This concept is known as conditional positive regard. Hockenbury (2014) describes this as, â€Å"the sense that the child is valued and loved only when she behaves in a way that is acceptable to others.† While it is important to feel loved and valued, placing limitations on those feelings can be detrimental to a child, as they may end up in denial and never learn how to express their true feelings. The third theory is the social cognitive perspective. This perspective focuses on how conscious thought affects the beliefs and goals that a person has. Hockenbury (2014) paraphrases a leading theorist, Albert Bandura by saying, â€Å"collectively a person’s cognitive skills, abilities and attitudes represent the person’s self-system†¦ it is out self-esteem that guides how we perceive, evaluate, and control our behavior in different situations.† What gives this perspective more credibility is that there is a way to measure its’ success, unlike the other theories. There are two widely known ways to assess personality, Projective testing, and self-report testing. One of the better-known projective tests born from the psychoanalytic approach is the Rorschach inkblot test. This test takes inkblot images and asks the person to describe what they see in that image. Because there is no specific or correct way to score that test,  the answers are subject to the interpretation of whoever is issuing the test. One benefit is that the person taking the test can consciously decide how they want to answer it, and effectively predict the outcome. There are also more structured tests known as self-report inventories, which is a structured question and answer test that rates the findings against a compiled average scoring from others. According to Cherry (n.d.), â€Å"Self-report inventories are often an [sic] good solution when researchers need to administer a large number of tests in relatively short space of time. Many self report inventories can be com pleted very quickly, often in as little as 15 minutes. This type of questionnaire is an affordable option for researchers faced with tight budgets.† Cherry goes on to say, â€Å"results of self report inventories are generally much more reliable and valid than projective tests. Scoring of the tests a standardized and based on norms that have been previously established.† Although there are valid benefits that can come from personality assessments, there are also concerns regarding how truthful the answers may be, and how the answers may convey thought rather than behavior. Flagg (2010) regards these tests as, â€Å"what people think and/or [sic] feel at any given moment. They do not reveal what someone can do.† An example of this would be answering yes to a question regarding a skill in a certain area, though there is no way to prove the possession of that skill. Flagg goes on to say that the â€Å"test scores box people into a set of definitions based on gross generalizations, which make them about as effective and applicable as horoscopes.† The Myers-Briggs personality assessment is a self-report test that was purposely designed to â€Å"box† a person into a defined category. Based on the answers to questions a person is labeled as either: introvert or extrovert, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, and judging or perceiving. Many large companies today offer this assessment to their employees in order to achieve a more efficient and successful work environment. While these tests are an effective way to gain answers, the truth is that the best way to learn about someone is to get to know them. References Cherry, K. (n.d.). What is a self report inventory. The Impact Of Computers In Our Daily Lives Computer Science Essay

The Impact Of Computers In Our Daily Lives Computer Science Essay Computers are commonly used items in many fields in our present world as will be in the future. Since the ages of the fathers of computers like Blaise Pascal and Charles Babbage. These machines have proven to be very essential or important and significant especially for people who run large organizations and industries, but also to the individuals themselves. Computers have affected our lives in a great deal in that almost every thing now is either run by or made by computers. For instance, in large industries, cars and space exploration devices and machines are designed by the use of computers, in hospitals where medical billings, patient admittance and other medical equipments are run and made by computers; traffic lights that run the city traffic are run by computers. One of the major impacts of computer is communication. The level of communication has gone higher through computer as now you can be connected with friends and family around the world, many business deals and conference is now made through the help of computer. Nevertheless the entertainment world would not have been as successful as it is if it weren`t for computers, because movies these days require a lot of animations and use of graphics to create effects. So basically the whole universe is a computerized universe as it is right now. Even back in the late years of 1600 to 1800, the people saw that life was becoming complex and so they needed to create something that would help them solve the complex problems and mathematics so they wouldn`t have to solve them manually. And so they came up with calculators which could only add and subtract mathematical problems. And the more the technology grew the more computers became important in their daily lives to the present. Computers have changed man a lot. It has helped man to step in to the future. Though computers have been said to take away man power, still computers have managed to make the impossible possible. In the upcoming paragraphs I will be talking about how computers have impacted on different fields.C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeMEDIACAGCAT10j0315447.jpg C:UsersRahatAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5Q0IF2038MC900357275[1].wmfC:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeMEDIACAGCAT10j0233018.wmfC:UsersRahatAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5LVY57DLOMP900315661[1].jpgC:UsersRahatAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5E5WK0490MC900090300[1].wmf IN BUSINESS FIELD In today`s life computers have impacted many fields such as the business fields. Many business organizations need computer to keep track of accounts, money and other stuff that they need. It has been noticed that business people use computers a lot both at their homes and at their working places. One may see that these people make pie charts and graphs that they use for presentations during business meetings where most of these charts were made by the help of computers. The business field uses computers a lot in their activities. C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeMEDIACAGCAT10j0233018.wmf Nevertheless, business organization now a dayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s use online marketing to advertise and contact with their consumers from different parts of the world without direct contact. For instance in www.amazon.com, this is an efficient way of business since it does not limit the area of supplies and consumers. It is through the use of computers that they are able to perform these activities. IN ENTERTAINMENT FIELD Another area that computers have impacted is the entertainment area. It has been seen that most of the people love science fiction and action movies and those that have neat effects like Matrix or Harry Potter. Well the graphics and animations used in those movies were done by computers themselves. Most of the movies today use these graphics to make movie effects look realistic. For instance in Harry Potter where Harry has to fight dragons and big snakes, all those effects look real but they are not realistic and some movies where we see aliens, space ships, monsters or flying men. Some movies are even made by computers from top to bottom like toy story and wall E. Not only movies but also game consoles use computer animations like the Play Station, PC and Nintendo. And it has been seen that games made by 3D graphics have been big breakthrough in gaming. All thanks to the awesome computer graphics. Even the music industry has been impacted in its way. Since music editing and video making all require computers to create effects or edit videos. Thus computers have a great deal of effect in the entertainment industry today. IN EDUCATIONAL FIELD Educational field has been impacted by computers as well in its own way. Like in universities computers help students a lot with their assignments and presentations. For instance a student had to do a project on World Religions; he would use the encyclopedia to search for information. Even when presenting their works like for presentations one would use Microsoft power point and writing of essays would require Microsoft word. Even teachers themselves use computers as well. They use computers to keep track of grades or prepare notes and presentations for their students. Through servers/networks educational institutes can share and control resources, by connecting computer devices together which saves a lot of time and money. For lecturers it becomes easy when a lecturer is giving a lecture then students can just take note rather than printing out pages and pages of notes. Nevertheless e-learning is also a product of computer`s development. Thus computers have a great deal of importance in the educational field. IN THE MEDICAL FIELD This is one important field that computer have impacted. Computers help in hospitals and even in small pharmacies. Doctors and nurses use computers to make records on medication of patients and in what amount so they wouldn`t lose track. But in big hospitals computers are also used to keep records of every patient. They also keep records on medical bills and equipments. Nevertheless scientists need computers so they could find cures to different diseases that keep erupting every day. If it wasn`t for computers these cures wouldn`t have been found. Therefore computers are important since they help us maintain our health.C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeMEDIACAGCAT10j0315447.jpg IN SPACE EXPLORATION Computers have had a great deal of impact in this area. Computers help in designing the right kinds of equipments and ships that are used now a days for most exploration. For instance a large organization like NASA needs these kinds of machines for space exploration. In space, small errors or miscalculations can create serious problems that cannot be easily corrected. Computers provide faster and more accurate handling of data, both in planning a mission and in analyzing parameters during a mission. Without them, effective space exploration would be nearly impossible. This has proven to be successful since everyday huge deal of inventions and discoveries from these explorations, like life in mars. And now scientists are trying to find if there is another life form on other planets. Computers also help them to solve complex mathematics such as from which degree/angle should the rocket be launched, which would be quite difficult for humans to calculate.

Andy Dufresne8217s Search for a Perfect World in the Shawshank Redemption :: essays papers

Andy Dufresne8217s Search for a Perfect World in the Shawshank Redemption ï » ¿Andy Dufresne's Search For A Perfect World Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is a wrongly convicted lawyer, serving time in the hell known as Shawshank Prison for the murder of his adulterous wife. Andy’s life in prison starts off miserably. He finds maggots in his food, is regularly raped by â€Å"the Sisters†, a group of prisoners who beat an rape other prisoners, and is threatened an harassed by the prison’s guards. However, as time goes on, Andy slowly turns the hell he lives in into a livable, if not perfect world. He files the guards’ tax returns, so that he saves the guards money in ways they could never have found. In return, the guards protect him for the sisters. He even helps the warden of Shawshank to launder money. (The warden receives bribes in exchange for the free prison labor he offers to farmers and businesses around the state.) Andy also befriends the prison’s one man black market, a man known as Red (Morgan Freeman), and is able to purchase a few luxuries. Through Red, Andy buys a rock hammer, which he uses to carve a chess set, and posters of the decades’ most beautiful women (as time goes on, Rita Hayworth is replaced by Marilyn Monroe. Andy, though, still has dreams of a truly perfect world, one without walls or cells, where he can be truly free. This causes Andy to work every night at digging tunnel out of the prison and into the outside world. Before Andy escapes, he tells Red about a place to go to, if he should ever get out of prison. Then one night he escapes. He then empties every account he built up while working for the warden. After which he exposes the money laundering scheme going on inside the prison. Finally Red gets parole, and he joins Andy on a sunny beach in Mexico. Andy has found his Utopia, a place where he has a friend, and no restrictions. Tim Robbins does an excellent job of portraying a man stuck amongst rapists, murderers, and thieves. Robbins shows just the right amount of unbeaten hope, combined with a certain distant, aloof look at times, put together these show that he, unlike the rest of the prisoners, has an internal fire, separating him from the rest of the inmates.

Comparing the Creatures and Crew in Moby Dick :: Comparison Compare Contrast Essays

Similarities Between Creatures and Crew in Moby Dick      When looking at the cycle of life one sees that creatures usually hunt others that are opposited from themselves. The relationship between cat and mouse is the apotheosis ot this idea, a classic case of one preying on the other where the two are looked upon as complete opposites. In Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" the whalers are hunting down the white whale. So according to my statement above this should make the crew members of the "Pequod" the absolute negation of Moby Dick. At first glance, maybe it seems this way, but in actuality the two are very similar. From the moment the crew members choose to embark on their voyage they become more like creatures of the sea than land dwellers. As the story evolves, the reader begins to uncover more and more similarities between the creatures on board the vessel, and those of the ocean. On top of this, as the characters progress and become more similar to their fellow ocean dwellers, they begin to actually show character traits similar to tha t of Moby Dick himself.    Before affiliating the crew aboard the ship with Moby Dick, there are some comparisons to be made between them and ocean inhabitants in general. While living in the ocean environment the men begin to acquire the same survival techniques as some of the organisms in the ocean. The manner in which the whalers go about slaughtering the whales is much like the way that the sharks react to the whale carcass being held stagnate in the water. "....because such incalculable hosts of sharks gather round the moored carcass, that were he left so for six hours, say, on a stretch, little more that the skeleton would be visible by mornong"(Melville 328). These sharks are savages in the face of sustenance. In most cases the sheer size of the whale prohibits it from being captured and consumed by the sharks. The only chance that they have at these huge beasts is when they are slung along side the whaling ships. Once they have their opening to this plethora of meat it becomes a barbaric feeding frenzy . These actions of the sharks reflect the actions of the whalers when taking part in the slaying of a whale. "Soon ranging up by his flank, Stubb, firmly planting his knee in the clumsy cleat, darted dart after dart into the flying gish.

The Kingdom of Thailand Essays -- Bangkok, South East Asia

History Assignment The Kingdom of Thailand formerly known as Siam, is found in South East Asia. This country is renowned for having the most recorded reigns in the world. (1) About 64 million people live in Thailand and its largest city is Bangkok which is also its capital city. Thailand experienced rapid economic growth between 1985 and 1995, (2) and today, it is a newly industrialised country well renowned with tourists. Architecture in Thailand is a vital part of the community as it represents both the struggle of living there because of severe weather and also the cultural significance of Thailand and their religious beliefs. Due to the heat from the afternoon sun in Thailand, the bottom part of the house is cooler. The houses reflect the climate and tackle better the attacks from nature. (3) Thailand managed to develop appropriate regional variations in its religious and vernacular buildings. Today, in Thailand, especially in Bangkok, one finds a great deal of contemporary architecture, as well as a contemporary twist on the more traditional Thai architecture, such as the stilt houses. (4, 5) This outlines in brief the contrasting difference between my two Thai architects named Duangrit Bunnag and Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri. Dr. Pinyo Suwankiri was born in Songkla in 1937 while Duangrit Bunnag was born in 1966 in Bangkok. Though there is a huge age gap between these two architects, both of them flourished in the last three decades with their recognised projects in Thailand. Pinyo Suwankiri has dedicated a lot of time and put in tremendous work in order to preserve the dignity and style of Thai architecture. The traditional form of Thai architecture is close to his heart and Dr. Suwankiri treasures it deeply which is ... ... his work while Dr.Suwankiri strived to preserve the dignity of the conventional Thai stilt structure. The projects of Pinyo are smaller in comparison to those of Duangrit. Here is a table from some information I gathered which states and compares the achievements they have received: Quoting China Williams (2009) from the book Thailand, Dr. Suwankiri is a traditional building specialist whose work is ubiquitous and the blueprint for an institutional aesthetic of traditional architecture. Following this, she explains that Duangrit Bunnag has excited the design world with his nearly undressed glass boxes offering a contemporary twist on mid-century modernism. The contrasting difference between these two architects cannot be highlighted better. They both offer a lot with regards to Thai architecture and both deliver a bold statement with their unique works.

Implementing School Vouchers Program

Most Americans believe that improving our agreement of pedagogy should be a fleet priority for government at the local, state, and federal official levels. Legislators, groom boards, teaching professionals, p atomic number 18nt groups, and fraternity organizations atomic number 18 attempting to implement innovative ideas to surrender children from failing direct placements, particularly in inner-city neighborhoods. Many of these groups support the verifier program. The measuring stick program proposed in dozens of states across the state would distri howevere monetary coupons (ranging in values between $2,500-$5,000) to parents of school-aged children, usually in troubled inner-city school districts. Parents could then occasion the verifiers towards the apostrophize of discipline at reclusive schools, including those dedicated to sacred indoctrination. School vouchers cogency seem a relatively grand way to increase the options poor parents direct for educating their children, when in fact, vouchers pose as a serious threat to values that are vital to the health of American democracy. These programs get down the constitutional principle of separation of church service building and state and threaten to counteract our clay of creation education. Implementation of voucher programs sends a clear message that we are big(a) up on man education. hitherto though vouchers would help some disciples, they bequeath non help all. Public education is for all children, regardless of their religion, academic talents or their ability to pay. This policy has made creation schools the backbone of American democracy, helping teen people grow into responsible citizens.Supporters of the voucher program, include that the program offers parents a cream. In fact, vouchers only stop up that some parents bequeath have some taxpayers money to drop towards a childs hush-hush school tuition. No voucher transcription go out cover the total cost of t uition, when tuition in a clubby school averages $10,000 per year, and the voucher totals less than $5,000. This leaves the parents nonoperational having to pay thousands of dollars, and approximately families cannot come up with the rest of the money to cover tuition costs. verifier systems do not insure that all(prenominal) child who applies allow for be selected to attend the esoteric school. Many religious schools currently reject cardinal of every three children who apply. The only thing that vouchers guarantee is that taxes provide go up. Taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for the vouchers, except they will have to pick up the tab for a whole refreshing bureaucracy, including hidden costs like transportation. Vouchers will also force taxpayers to support two entire education systems, public and offstage. To cite things worse, no extra money will be given to the schools that desperately contract taxpayers support. Being one of the most divers(a) countries in the world, the public school system stands as an institution that unifies Americans. Under the voucher program, our educational system, and our country would become more separated than it already is. With the help of taxpayers dollars, private schools would be filled with wealthy and bourgeoisie students, and the motivated students from inner cities. Some public schools would be left with fewer dollars to get word and the poorest of the poor and other students who, for one evidence or another were not private school material. All these situations would hardly win public education. Many studies suggest that vouchers are good for public schools yet, there is picayune evidence that they will ultimately remedy the quality of public education for those who get hold of it most. Proposition 38 would change public education statewide without first sampleing to jibe what type of state subsidy would submit to high quality education for most children.Californias public school enro llment exceeds 6 million, and the number of students voluntary to leave public schools in unknown, but there is an even smaller role of the number of spaces existing in private schools for these students willing to leave. (Draper Initiative) Proposition 38 is a huge and costly experiment that hold little accusations of improving student achievement, and does not provide real education plectron. In conclusion, school voucher programs undermine two great American traditions, public public education and the separation of the church and state.Instead of embracing vouchers, communities across the country should dedicate themselves to finding solutions that will be available to every American school aged child. Voucher programs will not allow the parent to make the choice of what school their child attends, but the voucher school will make the choice in which what school students can attend. Voucher schools get the money that taxpayers are give for, these children to attend these pri vate schools, but these children are still being rejected for umteen reasons. The end argument should be whether or not vouchers will lead to unspoiled educational freedom, and most likely it will not.

The Identification by Roger Mcgough Analysis

The Identification by Roger McGough Is a metrical composition in which t present is a Character for whom I olfactory perception benevolence. I will explain wherefore I feel benevolent towards that per male child, and what tripicular delivery and phrases the poet uses which mad me feel this way. The poem is somewhat a male child named Stephen, who was tragically killed in an explosion. His pose is called to the natural law station to check if thats his word of honor. His mystifys hopes atomic number 18 shattered as nearly all the establish proves that it is Stephen lying in front of him. The poet uses mevery words and phrases which makes me feel charity towards Stephens grow. When Stephens father enters the room, he says, So you think its Stephen? then(prenominal) Id best make sure. Be on the off the hook(predicate) side as it were. I sympathies with Stephens father here because he is very nervous about perceive the dead body for the first time. His use of cliche violence his anxiety about the strong possibility that his tidings is no more than. When Stephens father gathers the hair of the body, he says, Ah, in that locations been a mistake. The hair you turn over, its black, now Stephens fair I feel for the man here because when he sees the hair his hopes atomic number 18 raised that the body in front of him is not his sons. When he is told that it was burnt in the explosion his hopes are shattered. Burnt black furiousness on the mad injuries Stephen mustiness afford suffered. This is an awful thing to down as a parent. The poem goes on as Stephens father is getting more tense about Stephen. When the baptistery of the corpse is revealed, Stephens father says, The mask of charred wood, blistered, scarred-could that do been a childs face. I feel sympathetic towards Stephens father here as he was shocked to see the childs face.I thunder mug imagine how dreadful this must have been for Stephens father, as no parent would even ideate of their child in this situation in this state. Describing Stephens face as a mask of charred wood emphasis that his face is completely burned, that his father cant even have it off him. The corpse clothing is recognised by Stephens father, The sweater, where intact, looks in fact all too familiar. I sympathies with Stephens father here because once he was picking change state for his son and now he is picking his son based on that small piece of clothing. This is a fearful thing to do as a parent.Stephens father continues looking for evidence which would prove that the male child in front of him is not Stephen. When Stephens dad see the scoutbelt, he said, The scoutbelt. Yes thats his. I recognise the studs he hammer in This shows that Stephens is familiar with the scoutbelt as not a single person will have the ingest same scoutbelt. This makes Stephens father feel frightened as the body could be Stephens. Not a calendar week a ago suggest that he neer knew this wo uld happen to his son. His dad talks about his dependence to clothes, When boys get clothes-conscious ow you be intimate. This is one of the most heartbreaking part as this shows, that Stephen was a young teenager when this shot happened to him. I feel sorry for Stephens father as his heart must be broken in to million of piece. As the poem moves on, Stephens father examines the body more carefully. At the point when Stephens father is rightfully scared, he says, Pockets. Empty the pockets. Handkerchief? Could be whatever school boys. Stephens father cant find a chip off of hope to convince him that his son is out there missing.Stephens father says that the handkerchief could be any school boys because at the time when this poem was create verbally every kid had his own handkerchief. Something else catches his eyes, Oh this cant be Stephen. I dont allow his to smoke you see I can imagine how Stephens father must have mat up when he apothegm the cigarettes. Stephens father thought his race with Stephen was real close, he would disobey me. But we know that Stephen broke his fathers faith and trust in him by smoking behind his fathers back.Stephens father hopes are keep up on getting shattered as more and more things are belonging of Stephens. When Stephens father saw the penknife he said, but thats his penknife. Thats his alright. This makes me feel really sorry for Stephens father as all the evidence are going against him. The feeling which Stephens father is experiencing at the moment are the worst feeling a parent can have about their child. indeed the advert ring comes up, And thats his key on the key ring. Grant gave him just the other night. This makes me think that how on earth will Stephens father tell his tacit and wife what happened to Stephen. As Stephen was really close to his gran, that she gave him a key to her house, so that he can see her whenever he wants. Stephens father is assured of hat the boy in front of him is stephen, so t his must be him. This makes us think that Stephens fathers world is shattered. As the main thing in his life left him. In the final verse, Stephens father accepts Stephens flaws and starts making excuses about his cigarettes, No doubt that he was minding them or one of the of age(p) boys. His father says this so that no one thinks hard about Stephen and to make himself believe that his son didnt disobeyed him. In the last three lines, Stephens father says, Yes thats it. Thats him. Thats our Stephen. This makes me feel sympathy towards Stephens father as he accepts the fact that his son is no more. I can imagine that this must have been the hardest thing to do as parent. Stephens father is the person for whom I feel sympathy for and I have explained why I feel sympathetic towards him.
